Shepherd Maple Syrup Festival
Since 1958, this village has tapped the maples lining its own streets - some 2,000 pails and spiles set each February, with kids hauling sap buckets alongside the adults - to make the syrup for its own festival. What began as a one-day pancake dinner producing 125 gallons now serves 9,000 meals over three days, with retirees turning out two and a half tons of sausage the Saturday before, and every dollar still goes back into parks and summer programs for Shepherd's kids.
