Engineers Day (Soo Locks)
One day a year the Army Corps of Engineers opens the Soo Locks to the public, and downtown Sault Ste. Marie turns into a street festival around it - Portage Avenue closes to traffic, fifty-odd vendors set up, and the park and observation deck stay open until ten at night while thousand-foot freighters pass through. The tradition dates to 1975, when the mayor declared an Army Corps of Engineers Day. In most years visitors can walk across the MacArthur Lock itself, though construction and security work has closed that in some recent years - check before you go.
