Crews close the streets on a Wednesday night and build eighteen blocks of festival in thirty-six hours - tents, power, stages - and by Friday downtown Royal Oak belongs to two hundred acts on ten stages, a hundred juried artists, and a food court of dozens of Michigan restaurants. Founded in Pontiac in 1998 and moved here in 2010, it draws three to four hundred thousand people over Labor Day weekend and has raised more than $8 million for local nonprofits along the way.
