Wheatland Music Festival
The first one, in August 1974, was a benefit to help the Mt. Pleasant Food Co-Op make rent - fewer than a dozen organizers, a borrowed farm, a stage built from sawhorses and boards with black plastic on hand in case of rain, and a horse trough on a truck for fire patrol. Their reasoning was simple: Mecosta County farmers weren't going to leave during harvest for a fiddlers' convention in West Virginia, so bring the old-time music to them. Fifty-two years later it's 160 acres of traditional music, dance, workshops, and impromptu jam sessions - and everyone greets each other with 'Happy Wheatland.'
