Posen Potato Festival
When Posen's Polish settlers wrote home in the 1870s urging relatives to join them, they described the abundant northern Michigan land but conveniently left out that it was full of rocks - and the one crop that thrived in that stubborn soil was the potato. Seventy-plus years on, this village of 270 swells to thousands each September for potato pancakes served by the VFW and Knights of Columbus, a polka pavilion running till 1 a.m., a grand parade, and bump-n-run demolition derbies.
