Curwood Festival
James Oliver Curwood was the highest-paid author per word in the world when he died in 1927, with more than 180 films made from his adventure novels - and he wrote them in a Norman chateau he built on the bank of the Shiawassee River as his studio. The castle is a museum now, and since 1978 Owosso has thrown a four-day festival in his name: two parades, a saga writing contest, fire twirling, and a river race where paddlers run a dam drop and have to stay upright under the suspension bridge to finish.
