Paul Bunyan Days
The first known Paul Bunyan story in print ran in the Oscoda Press on August 10, 1906, written by a former lumberjack turned newspaperman - which is why Michigan formally declared this town the legend's true birthplace in 2006, over the objections of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Maine. For more than forty years Oscoda has backed the claim with a festival at Furtaw Field, in the shadow of a 13-foot Bunyan statue that started life as papier-mâché in a Detroit parade. Chainsaw carving, log chopping, a parade, and carvings auctioned off at the end.
