Heikki Lunta Winter Festival
In 1970 a radio salesman in Hancock named David Riutta faced a snowmobile race about to be canceled for lack of snow, so he invented a Finnish snow god - Heikki Lunta, literally 'Hank Snow' - and wrote him a snow dance song in under an hour. It aired on WMPL, a blizzard hit, and the race was postponed for too much snow. Riutta had to write a sequel called 'Heikki Lunta Go Away.' The whole thing reached the Today Show. Negaunee now throws him a festival every February: luge sliding, snowshoe lantern tours, fat-tire bike racing, bonfires, and a snow dance.
