UP 200 Sled Dog Race
On a February night, downtown Marquette trucks in snow to bury three blocks of Washington Street, and at seven o'clock twelve-dog teams launch from the chute straight into the Upper Peninsula wilderness. First run in 1990 and now an Iditarod qualifier, the UP200 covers 228 miles to Grand Marais and back through near-wilderness, creek crossings, and heavy forest, with the Midnight Run and Jack Pine 30 alongside it. It takes about a hundred volunteers, and the ceremonial start is one of the great winter spectacles in Michigan.
