Art on the Rocks
In 1959, thirty-five artists propped their work on the black rocky hillside beneath the Father Marquette statue, and the organizer named the show for exactly where it stood. Five years later TIME magazine ran a full-page ad featuring it, captioned 'A good place to spend the summer, Marquette, Michigan.' Sixty-six years on it's one of the oldest art fairs in the state - 100-plus juried artists in painting, glass, ceramics, and jewelry set up along Lake Superior each July, always free to walk through, with proceeds going to Upper Michigan's oldest arts association.
