Mackinac Island Fudge Festival
Mackinac Island has been making fudge since the 1880s, when Victorian tourists began hauling slabs of it home on the ferry - so many that day-trippers are still affectionately called fudgies. Every August the island leans all the way in: fudge-making demonstrations on marble slabs in shop windows, tastings up and down Main Street, contests and games, all on an island where cars are banned and the whole place smells faintly of chocolate.
