Dragon on the Lake

The whole festival sprang from a 'dragon' spotted on Lake Orion in the mid-1800s - a sighting that turned out to be a prank by two local boys, but the legend stuck so thoroughly that the town's sports teams are still called the Dragons. Every August the Orion Art Center throws its biggest fundraiser around the myth, with drum-driven dragon-boat races (teams of 22 paddling down the lake), an art fair, a chalk-art contest, a lighted boat parade, and a Dragon Pub.
