National Trout Festival
Kalkaska has marked the opening of Michigan's trout season since 1935, earning itself the nickname 'the town that closes all business to go fishing.' They crown a Trout King each year - the first, in 1935, was enthroned on a pine stump mounted to a trailer and towed up Cedar Street - and the whole thing is presided over by a seventeen-foot trout sculpture downtown, built over 320 hours using a real frozen trout as the model.
