Michigan Renaissance Festival
The fictional 16th-century village here is called Hollygrove, a name stitched together because the grounds straddle Holly and Groveland townships - and since 1979 it's grown into 312 acres drawing a quarter-million visitors a season. Seven themed weekends run from late August into October (Viking Invasion, Pirates & Pups, Highland Fling), with full-contact armored jousting three times daily, 17 stages, 175 artisans, and a crowd that shows up in costume whether or not anyone asked them to.
