Harbor Beach Maritime Festival
The Thumb's coastline had no natural harbors, so ships caught in Great Lakes storms had nowhere to run - until 1883, when Harbor Beach completed what became the world's largest man-made freshwater harbor, 650 acres of refuge behind three breakwalls. The festival began in 2001 to mark the lighthouse passing from federal hands to the city, and now fills four July days with 20-plus hours of free beachfront music, what's believed to be Michigan's largest bocce tournament, a frog jumping contest, and fireworks that echo off the water.
