Juhannus Summer Solstice Celebration
National Geographic has called Hancock the most Finnish place in the United States - one in three people in the Copper Country claims Finnish heritage, descendants of the immigrants who came to work the copper mines. Every June the city marks Midsummer the way Finland does: a kokko bonfire at Porvoo Park, the raising of the midsummer pole on Quincy Green, lakeside saunas and cold plunges, and a dance at the Finnish American Heritage Center. Then come the events that sound invented until you see the lines: the Wife-Carrying Contest, the International Sauna Games, and an air guitar exhibition.
