Hamtramck Paczki Day
Hamtramck, the small city surrounded by Detroit that spent most of the last century as America's best-known Polish enclave, treats Fat Tuesday as a holiday. Paczki are rich, jelly- or custard-filled Polish doughnuts, made to use up the sugar and lard before Lent, and on Paczki Day the lines outside the city's bakeries start before dawn. The celebration spreads through town, centered on New Palace Bakery and Srodek's. Come early, come hungry, and bring cash.
