UP State Fair
Before the Mackinac Bridge existed, hauling Upper Peninsula livestock down to the state fair in Detroit was impossible - so an Escanaba man asked the legislature why the state couldn't fund a fair up north too, and won. The first opened in September 1928, fifty cents to get in, a quarter after six. When Michigan cut funding for both its state fairs in 2010, the downstate one folded and this one went independent - making the U.P.'s fair the only state fair Michigan has left, and still the biggest week of the year north of the bridge.
