Elk Rapids Harbor Days

Seventy-one years on, this former 1800s lumber town - now a laid-back harbor village that locals affectionately call Traverse City's little sidekick, minus the Cherry Festival crowds - still throws its four-day summer party entirely free, run by volunteers and funding local organizations. The week runs from a Grande Parade and Mutt Strut dog parade to sand sculpture contests and paddleboard races on the Elk River, closing at dusk with a boat lighting contest in the harbor and fireworks over the water.
