Petoskey Stone Festival
Michigan's state stone is a 350-million-year-old fossilized coral, patterned with a honeycomb of ancient polyps and washed onto Lake Michigan's shores by long-gone glaciers - and every May, Eastport throws a lakeside party for it at Barnes Park. Rockhounds, artisans, and families gather for a competitive Petoskey stone hunt along the beach, a stone-skipping contest, and vendor tables full of jewelry and art made from the hexagon-flecked fossil.
