Día de los Muertos in Southwest Detroit
Mexicantown has marked Día de los Muertos since 1999, and it's grown into a neighborhood-wide observance rather than a single event - businesses, churches, and restaurants along West Vernor install ofrendas in their windows for a self-guided Tour of Ofrendas, each altar dedicated to specific people. Around 5,000 visitors come through between late October and mid-November. Ballet folklórico, pan de muerto from the Mexicantown bakeries, a community ofrenda at Valade Park on the riverfront, and a holiday UNESCO recognizes as Intangible Cultural Heritage, kept up in a Detroit neighborhood.
