Dally in the Alley

In 1977 the North Cass Community Union was fighting the city and Wayne State over plans to demolish neighborhood homes - and started selling beer on card tables in the alley to help cover the lawyer fees. That block party became Detroit's largest community festival, still run entirely by volunteers with no corporate sponsors, funded by beer and merch bearing its alley-cat mascot. Five stages of rock, funk, hip hop, and Detroit techno fill the Cass Corridor alleys the Saturday after Labor Day, free to everyone.
