Crystal Falls Bass Festival

Sixty-one years on, the Crystal Falls Lions Club still opens Bass Festival weekend with the Finn vs. Polak softball games - a detail that tells you exactly who settled Iron County. Saturday brings a parade down Superior Avenue, then the Herbie Nylund Memorial Canoe Race down the Paint River from the power dam to the bridge at the bottom of the hill, named for a longtime racer the town lost. The Lions cook 500 barbecue chicken dinners, first come first served, alongside a week-long fishing contest, a car show, volleyball, and the Run Your Bass Off 5K.
