Tuscola County Pumpkin Festival
Local farmers grow the pumpkins, hand them to schoolkids across the county to paint, and the finished crop covers the courthouse lawn each October - the visual heart of a Thumb tradition that's drawn 50,000 people a year since 1981. The whole festival is deliberately free, paid for by pumpkin pies baked by high schoolers at the county tech center and sold by volunteers, funding four days of pie-eating contests, a giant-pumpkin weigh-off, a car show, and a dog parade called Strut with a Mutt.
