Northern Michigan Fiber Festival
The woman who runs it keeps 35 sheep and a llama on an 80-acre farm and has been spinning wool for over thirty years - one sheep gives eight to twelve pounds of fleece, which goes down to a mill in Frankenmuth to come back clean and ready to spin. Every September fifty-plus vendors from across the Midwest fill the APlex with hand-dyed yarn, wool goods, and fiber of every kind. There are spinning demos, a free area where you can try a wheel yourself, classes in felted chickens and your first pair of socks, knitting lounges, and a Fiber Cafe. It's indoors, so it's never rained out, and it's free.
