Michigan Brown Trout Festival
The longest-running fishing tournament in the Great Lakes has taken over Alpena's boat harbor every July since 1975, ten days of anglers working the waters of Thunder Bay for brown trout, walleye, steelhead, salmon, and lake trout - with the closing Super Tournament carrying a $10,000 top prize. It's run entirely by volunteers, and they take the water personally: after realizing the festival was burning through 25,000 plastic cups a year, they scrapped them altogether to protect the bay that makes the whole thing possible.
